1997 750 - Rectifier

I went out for the first time on my SRAD at the weekend and it broke down. It was getting very hot so I shut the engine down. Battery was flat. Tried to bump start it but it wouldn't fire.

I suspect the rectifier. What is the best way to check one of these units please?
